Q: Mr. Tucker is a member of the housekeeping staff assigned to clean the OR suite. Do the new med management (MM) standards allow him to do this if non-controlled drugs are kept in the OR suite in unlocked anesthesia carts?

A: If your hospital's policies and procedures consider housekeeping staff such as Mr. Tucker to be "authorized" personnel, then he would be permitted to enter the OR suite, even if the anesthesia cart remains unlocked between cases. Otherwise, the OR suite must be secured when not in use and inaccessible to patients, the public, or staff who aren't approved to be there.

Editor's note: The above case scenario is from the new online course "New medication management standards for the nursing/clinical staff." For more information on this and other Accreditation courses go to www.hcprofessor.com and click on Accreditation/Survey Preparation.
