In an effort to prepare your staff for what to expect during a JCAHO survey, consider the following ideas that worked well at Mecosta County General Hospital in Big Rapids, MI. The facility has a 20 member committee called the Accreditation Core Team (ACT) that oversees the various JCAHO Chapter Standards. Two team members (usually consisting of a clinician and a non-clinician) visited all hospital departments once or twice a week for a couple of months, encouraging staff to select questions to answer from a fish bowl. Staff received candy bars for participating. Not only was this idea well received by the participants, but the activity proved successful among team members as they only devoted their time once or twice. In addition to coordinating a JCAHO preparation program for all employees, the team posted flyers in the restrooms with bulleted JCAHO questions and answers that staff should know for the survey.
