Nurse practitioners in Tennessee push for less oversight

The Tennessee Nurses Association is seeking the removal of a state law that requires physicians to monitor nurse practitioners’ clinics.
Clinics run by nurse practitioners are required to have 20% of their charts reviewed by physicians, as well as prescriptions for controlled substances. Clinics must also have a physician visit the site once a month. Nurse practitioners, especially those in rural areas, worry that they would have to close their clinics if the physicians who provide oversight choose to retire or move away.
The Tennessee Medical Association opposes severing the link between nurse practitioners and physicians but is open to changing the law to perhaps allow the oversight to be provided via telemedicine or over a shared electronic medical record system.
