Due to a subsection of Alabama state law, a woman who punched a nurse at Jackson Hospital has been charged with second-degree assault.
Terri Tellis was being held following an incident at the hospital last Thursday when she came in contact with the nurse. Citing privacy concerns, police could not disclose if Tellis was a patient at the hospital. The altercation did not appear to be part of an ongoing dispute. The nurse was performing her official duties when Tellis allegedly punched her in the face with a closed fist. The punch caused some light swelling and ringing in the nurse’s ears.
Second-degree assault charges are normally reserved for defendants who cause serious injuries or injuries with deadly weapons. However, under a subsection of state law, assaulting healthcare workers is a felony, much like how assaulting a police officer is a more serious offense.
