In a move to ease nurse shortages, a new law in Alabama will allow nurses with multistate licenses to work in the state.
The law will go into effect on August 1 and allow the state to opt into the Nurse Licensure Compact. Nurses who live in states that have opted into the compact can work in other participating states without obtaining an additional license.
The Alabama Board of Nursing said the compact will help rural hospitals fill open positions, allow nurses to cross state lines without delay in cases of emergencies, and make it easier for employers to hire travel or temporary nurses. Licenses will be issued beginning January 1, 2020.
