The highest-paying states for registered nurses

Registered nurses in California are the highest paid, according to data collected by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics in May 2018. The average annual salary of nurses in California was $106,950, a 4% increase from similar data collected in 2017.

The next highest-paying states in 2018 were Hawaii ($98,080), Massachusetts ($92,140), Oregon ($91,080), and Alaska ($89,310). Registered nurses in the District of Columbia were also among the top-earners with an average annual salary of $92,350. Nationwide, the average annual salary of registered nurses was $75,510, a 2.6% increase from the year prior.

The lowest-paying states were Arkansas ($60,780), Alabama ($59,470), Iowa ($59,130), Mississippi ($58,490), and South Dakota ($58,340).
