Revisiting Joint Commission online
A few months ago I recommended the Joint Commission’s weekly complimentary online publication Joint Commission Online. At this time of year when staffing is problematic and everyone is busy preparing for a variety of holidays, this publication is a good way to keep up-to-date on Joint Commission happenings as well as identify education topics. If you haven’t already subscribed I encourage you to do so immediately.
A recent issue presented information about a new initiative and website that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and its partners, including the Joint Commission, have launched to help prevent surgical fires. Detailed information is available at www.fda.gov/Drugs/DrugSafety/SafeUseInitiative/PreventingSurgicalFires/default.htm. You may also sign up for a free subscription service that notifies you via e-mail every time the site is updated.
The publication also directs you to a variety of education resources as well as practical tips to help meet seasonal challenges such as facilitating flu vaccinations among staff members.
I find the patient education materials, which can often be downloaded for use free of charge, to be especially helpful. The Joint Commission is continually adding to this collection of resources and the Joint Commission Online is an excellent way to offer good patient education in a time-efficient manner.
