The Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC) and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has created a new initiative called the Investing in Innovations Initiative, or i2 Initiative, which is designed to stimulate innovations in health IT, according to an HHS news release.

The program features prizes and competitions to accelerate the development of solutions and communities around key issues in health IT. The i2 initiative also analyzes the current health IT environment and tracks and models clusters of innovation while identifying connections between different innovator communities. The effort will also help inform future advisory services and policy-making decisions.

ONC has already given nearly $5 million to the Capital Consulting Corporation and Health 2.0 to fund projects supporting innovations in research and encouraging health IT development through open-innovation activities like prizes and challenges.
