The Joint Commission has approved a new National Patient Safety Goal (NPSG) set to go into effect in 2012, focusing on catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI), one of the most frequently occurring healthcare-acquired infections (HAI) in the nation.
The goal, NPSG.07.07.01, requires hospitals to implement evidence-based practices for the prevention of indwelling CAUTI and will be a part of only the hospital and critical access accreditation programs. The goal will not be applicable to pediatric populations.
