HealthLeaders Media has put together a list of 11 healthcare buzzwords that every care provider should know and pay attention to in 2011. The collection of terms and phrases were selected from journal articles, conferences, blogs, and other media sources. They represent the changing healthcare environment and are sure to be heard many times in the upcoming year.

On the list is “EHR-EMR-HIT interoperability,” a concept that EHR (electronic health records), EMR (electronic medical records), and HIT (health information technology) use technology to maintain communication and connectivity online between providers’ data and patients’ data.

Also on the list is “creative destruction,” the idea that in order to build a bigger and better healthcare system, the old one will need to be torn down; “teachback” a method of having patients repeat back to providers what has already been said to them in order to make sure they understand what they need to know about their recovery; and “pink fatigue,” a word used to describe the potential overkill of pink used in advertising and product placement in the search for better treatment for breast cancer.
