A recent publication of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) suggests that the nurses have a very important role to play in the assessment, planning, and architectural design of hospitals and healthcare facilities. The publication refers to evidence-based design (EBD), a relatively new methodology that uses research into the impact of physical surroundings on patient safety to make decisions about hospital layout, lighting, and other physical design elements.

According to the publication, Addressing the Quality and Safety Gap- Part III: The Impact of the Built Environment on Patient Outcomes and the Role of Nurses in Designing Health Care Facilities, nurses at all levels and in every setting can provide design insight that promotes safe, effective, and quality patient care.
