1. PA INSURER FUNDS PATIENT SAFETY EFFORT
A Philadelphia-based Blue Cross affiliate this week kicked in $750,000 of the $1.3 million price tag for a medication safety project covering hospitals in southeastern Pennsylvania. The contribution, from Independence Blue Cross, will enable the Regional Medication Safety Program for Hospitals to move forward, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. The 18-month-old program, which provides training and education on reducing adverse drug errors, had languished since its inception for lack of funding. Participating hospitals use the training to try to achieve 16 patient safety goals, including instituting computerized prescribing. Read up on the program at http://www.dvhc.org/rr/medsafeprogram.htm
2. SENATORS ADDRESS ELDER ABUSE
A bill filed in the Senate this past Monday would fund additional training for health care workers to better recognize the signs of elder abuse, according to the Associated Press. The training called for in the Elder Justice Act of 2003 (S.333) would mirror that now used to detect signs of child abuse and domestic violence. Law enforcement officers and prosecutors would also get help recognizing these signs under the proposal. Read the full text of S.333 at http://thomas.loc.gov
3. PREVENTING WORKPLACE VIOLENCE
Training should cover the following topics:
--The workplace violence prevention policy
--Risk factors that cause or contribute to assaults
--Early recognition of escalating behavior, or recognition of warning signs or situations that may lead to assaults

SECURITY
'"Ghost" standards give everybody the creeps during JCAHO surveys'
In the case of infant abduction drills, the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) has no written standard or intent statement requiring you to conduct them on a quarterly basis. However, standard EC.2.9.1 requires you to test the response phase of the emergency management plan, and the intent statement gives further guidance on the frequency and types of drills. The intent statement of standard EC.2.9.2 mandates fire drills on a quarterly basis.
