Q: We have both preceptors and mentor programs at our hospital and some nurses have served in these roles for years. What suggestions do you have for helping them keep their preceptor and mentor skills up to date?
A: What about a networking group for preceptors and mentors? Keep the groups separate since the roles and responsibilities of preceptors and mentors are different.
Here are some ideas for fostering a networking group:
- Meal time (lunch, dinner, etc.) networking session a few times a year: If your budget permits, you may even be able to provide a light meal. Use this time for networking and continuing education.
- Electronic blasts: Send out e-mails, texts, etc. containing helpful short bites of information useful for preceptors and mentors. Include your e-mail address so they can send you specific questions pertaining to preceptoring and mentoring.
- Online journal clubs: Provide links to articles and other resources pertinent to preceptors and mentors.
- Share success stories: Share rewarding stories of successful preceptorships and mentorships. (Always remember to protect confidentiality.)
