An updated edition of the Nursing Professional Development Scope & Standards of Practice was recently published. The project was the result of an exhaustive collaborative effort between the National Nursing Staff Development Organization (NNSDO) and the American Nurses Association (ANA). The new 2010 edition focuses on how the role of professional development (staff development) has evolved since the last edition was published 10 years ago.
The 2010 Scope & Standards now takes into consideration that we live in a globalized practice environment. The former practice model was a triangle with three intersecting circles, labeled continuing education, staff development, and academic education. The new model focuses on a system inputs model that promotes professional development as a specialized nursing practice. The core of this model is evidence-based practice and practice-based evidence.
