A nursing appreciation gala for UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, MA, scheduled for Tuesday, September 21st, has been canceled after a nurses union called for a boycott of the event, and informed media of their plan to hold a demonstration outside of the event.
The nurses say the hospital’s constant “disrespect” for nurses under the current leadership, poor staffing conditions, and the recent news that a medical-surgical floor will be closed, resulting in the loss of nursing positions and support staff, is the cause of their concern.
Management states that current financial difficulties will lead to staff and patient cuts, which led to the decision to cancel the event.
