Inside scoop from our experts: Prepping physicians for survey
HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, September 13, 2010
This week’s question about nurse sensitive indicators comes from a discussion on JourneyTalk. Meryl Montgomery, RN, MSN, nursing QI coordinator, MPD, with the Medical Center of Central Georgia in Macon, GA provides some feedback.
Q: Does anyone have a list of questions or site visit preparation items specific to physicians? How have you prepared physicians for the site visit and what has worked best?
A: In both the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program ® (MRP) designation and re-designation site visit, our appraisers spoke with physicians in a specific interview with them, as well as on the nursing units when they visited. The interactions tended to be loosely constructed around the following types of questions:
- How does being a designated hospital impact patient outcomes and pt satisfaction?
- Do you know what it means to be a designated hospital?
- Did you know that this hospital is MRP designated? How have you been involved in this process?
- Describe nurse-physician relationships and collaboration here.
- How is nursing care?
- Can you tell a difference between nursing practice in this hospital and others that are not MRP designated? How so?
We gave handouts and included a couple of articles in the physician newsletter, as well as targeted specific physicians to talk with one-on-one. The high admitters, vocal MDs, etc. were visited by nurse management or staff nurses from the units where they generally practice. We used the following tool as a starting point for dialogue. Nurses also attend medical executive as well as section meetings to discuss MRP and other nursing issues that occurs throughout the year as issues/ opportunities arise. We also have a lot of articles in the hospital’s newsletter, which physicians also read.
Editor's note: On JourneyTalk you can network with your peers, discuss the new manual, share your helpful tips, and get advice on how to meet the program's expectations. Become a member of JourneyTalk when you subscribe to HCPro's Resource Center for the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®.
