Inside the program: Utilizing culture of excellence for performance expectations
HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, June 21, 2010
As part of the organizational component for the development of charge nurses, it is imperative that as you develop your charge nurse job description or charter, that you consider utilizing the culture of excellence components into your performance expectations of the role.
This is just as you would have it when you hired an employee the first time. Meet with your potential charge nurse or current charge nurse and set the groundwork. Review performance expectations for the role and demonstrate how they will be evaluated on an ongoing basis and annually in their performance reviews. Modifying the performance appraisal processes to ensure active participation and commitment to succession planning is imperative. You may want to include organizational goals and unit-based goals that relate to the responsibilities and duties of your charge nurses in their performance appraisals.
