Q. I work in a small hospital with limited technology tools, but I've been hearing a lot about nursing portals. What is a nursing portal?

A.
A nursing portal is a Web site that provides access or links to specific types of information. The goal of a portal is to save the user time by facilitating entry to Web pages and links to specific information.

For example, suppose you want a nursing portal specific to nursing orientation. The Web site lists important topics such as policies, procedures, protocols, phone directory, nursing professional practice model, pharmacy information, online courses, etc. These main topics are subdivided with appropriate links. For example, procedures are grouped into categories such as administrative, safety, emergency response team, etc. The orientee can click on these topics and have quick access to procedures listed in these categories. Further links allow learners to click on a specific policy for review.

Here is a good article about nursing portal development: Welsh, S., & Houston, S. (2010). Development and evaluation of a nursing portal. The Journal of Continuing Education in Nursing, 41(3): 133-138,
