Q: I have just earned my certification in Nursing Professional Development. I know I need continuing education (CE) contact hours to maintain my certification and license, but I'm having trouble finding good sources of CE that focus on professional development. Do you have any suggestions about resources?
A: First of all, congratulations on your success, which is wonderful news! There are some good resources for professional development/staff development contact hours and I suggest you start with resources devoted to our specialty. The National Nursing Staff Development (NNSDO) Web site (www.nnsdo.org) gives information about in person programs, as well as some online CE programs. If you have a local affiliate of NNSDO, that is also a good resource. Information about local affiliates can be found on the national Web site.
If you are a member of the Sigma Theta Tau, the honor society of nursing, visit www.nursingsociety.org. This site will give you information about their education events and their local chapters. Their publications are devoted to scholarly research, which has significant professional development implications.
