Inside scoop from our experts: Evaluating shared governance
HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, March 9, 2010
This week?s question and answer come from a conversation on JourneyTalk. This week, our answer comes from Nancy Arata, RN, BSN, MBA,Athens Regional Medical Center in Athens, GA.
Q: What methods or tools can be used related to evaluate the effectiveness of a shared governance model?
A: We developed a tool to survey all nursing-wide and unit-based council members in an effort to evaluate our shared governance model. We also held focus groups of approximately 10-15 people to determine what was working well, what was frustrating, and what barriers they faced.
Our organization did this after two years of using our model. Based on feedback and results from a research study we conducted correlating shared governance survey results with RN unit-based satisfaction, we changed our model.
It has been in effect for two months. We are very much focused on decisions being made and outcome measures. The staff and leadership have given very positive feedback so far.
