Quality improvement: Requirements for collecting nursing-sensitive indicators

The new ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® (MRP) model unveiled in 2008 requires MRP hospitals and those aspiring to become MRP designated to demonstrate exceptional outcomes. Exceptional outcomes defined by the MRP include outperforming the mean in multiple nursing sensitive indicators (NSI) based on a national benchmark. These include a wide array of indicators and the applying hospital must also choose to collect data for some specialty-specific, nationally benchmarked indicators. This MRP requirement has led to an explosion of unit/population specific indicators. MRP listservs and networking platforms have produced a number of indicators, which are represented in the table below. The list continues to grow as more hospitals become interested in population-specific NSIs.
