U.S. resuming airlifts from Haiti

Emergency Management Alert, February 2, 2010

After a five-day suspension, the White House has announced it will resume military airlifts of Haitians injured in the January 12 earthquake, reports the New York Times.

The airlifts were stalled after Florida officials worried how hospitals were going to handle the influx of patients hospitals and pay for the care provided, though there is debate as to which was the actual reason for the suspension of treatments. The U.S. government has since persuaded other Caribbean nations to help with urgent cases.

David Halstead, an official with the Florida Division of Emergency Management, told the Times that Florida has treated 530 Haitian patients and that 190 remained in its hospitals.
