HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, February 1, 2010
This week’s question on staff education comes from a discussion on JourneyTalk. Meryl Montgomery, RN, MSN, nursing QI coordinator with the Medical Center of Central Georgia in Macon, GA, provides some insight.
Q: Has anyone developed tools/surveys to understand and evaluate the effectiveness of education provided to nurses at all levels about the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program? (MRP)? We are interested in doing pre- and post-data collecting and evaluating best practices around sharing the MRP components, our evidence to support our application, etc. A: There are many ways to assess educational effectiveness, including pre- and post-tests (paper and pencil and computer based), staff reports and needs assessments, participation in class or “hits” to a computer-based module or MRP intranet site developed internally.
Our most effective methods of education have been completed during intensive workdays and retreats to hone in on a specific component or devise action plans. Other methods we’ve used to measure include case studies to assess knowledge and application of professional practice/delivery model, interviews, and focus groups. “Mock” surveys that utilize both staff nurses and managers can be particularly effective to both assess knowledge and understanding and educate at the same time. We graph our progress on certain elements that stump our nurses more than others and are able to use the trends to focus educational efforts.
Nurses’ ability and willingness to engage in documentation is also a gauge of understanding and provides a great vehicle to educate.
