In the news: NY Nurses Association commends state Senate for passage of bill
Stressed Out Nurses Weekly, February 1, 2010
The New York State Nurses Association has commended the New York State Senate's passage of an act to amend a law that makes assaults on registered nurses a Class C felony, according to a press release by the association. The Nurses Association, which represents 37,000 nurses, is now strongly advocating for the bill to be passed by the New York State Assembly and turned into law.
Assaulting emergency response officials, such as police officers, firefighters, and emergency medical technicians, is already a Class C felony. The association says nurses often are in contact with many members of the general public whose stress levels may escalate enough to incite violence. The Nurses Association also notes that nurses' work environments, which are often understaffed, often force nurses to work alone.
