Inside scoop from our experts: Educate and inspire staff across a health system
HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, December 29, 2009
This week, a reader asks about how to educate staff across multiple locations when a health system is applying for ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® (MRP) designation. Read the response from advisor Carolyn K. Lewis, PhD, RN, CNAA,BC, assistant dean of nursing at Bluegrass Community and Technical College in Lexington, KY.
Q: How can we educate staff across multiple locations?
A: With more organization establishing multiple service sites, the challenge of getting the word out is increasing for MRP directors, champions, and steering committee members. One way to deal with it is to use your internal e-mail system to educate and prepare your staff on the journey. The ability to send such a uniform message to many people almost instantaneously makes e-mail an extremely attractive medium.
On a scheduled basis, post weekly or daily tips or questions with answers. A "question of the week" campaign can be an effective way to prepare the staff to respond consistently to appraiser questions. For example, you could publish the question at the beginning of the week and follow up with the answer on Friday.
Don't be afraid to use the same question more than once. Repetition will help your staff remember key points.
Editor's note: Do you have a question for our experts? If you would like us to consider your query for publication, please e-mail it to senior managing editor Rebecca Hendren at rhendren@hcpro.com.
