In the news: MA hospital reduces patient falls
Stressed Out Nurses Weekly, December 21, 2009
Beverly Hospital in Massachusetts has an elderly patient population of 60%, reports WCVBTV Boston. That's why it's using the Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders (NICHE) to lower their patient fall rate.
The hospital has been identifying patients at risk, keeping their beds lower to the ground, and ensuring the call button and phone are within arm's reach. Staff have also worn goggles that simulate tunnel vision or a loss of vision to understand what it might be like for some patients with vision problems so they can better care for them
The hospital also runs an exercise program so those who are at risk for falls can build strength and balance.
