HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, November 24, 2009
The CNO of the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center recently received one of the nursing profession's highest honors when she was inducted as a fellow into the American Academy of Nursing.
Barbara Summers, PhD, RN, has been M.D. Anderson's vice president and CNO since 2004, leading the hospital's 2,800 RNs and 55 LVNs. Summers steered the organization to its redesignation as an ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® recipient in 2006.
As CNO, Summers created a new academic department within the division of nursing that includes a flourishing nursing research program and a group of nurses with doctoral degrees who want to pursue teaching in addition to patient care.
