Inside the program: Forming a virtual committee to plan nursing excellence award

One of the first steps on the journey to ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® designation is to form a committee to analyze what needs to be done and make a plan. But right now, you might be thinking, "Who has time to attend yet another committee meeting?"
Consider setting up a virtual committee. A virtual committee has the same purpose and fulfills the same goals as an in-person committee, but the meetings are held via e-mail, instant message, or other forms of distance communication.
Here's how to get started:
- Identify people who want to serve on the committee.
- If you have the technology available, set up a mechanism for a live online chat that will allow committee members to converse electronically. If not, consider using an instant messaging format.
- If live chats or instant messaging are not effective, consider communicating via group e-mails. You may need to conduct a face-to-face meeting to devise the committee's structure, such as how often you will need to communicate, deadlines for completion of committee tasks, and e-mail etiquette.
