This week, Adrianne E. Avillion, DEd, RN, discusses the importance of developing values, a vision, and mission statement to help guide the way for implementing education.
Q: How do the value, vision, and mission statement of a department aid in the education of staff members?
A: The staff development department's values, vision, and mission statements establish a foundation for the delivery of its products and services. These statements must not only guide the way education is planned and implemented but also coincide with the organization's values, vision, and mission statements.
A values statement, sometimes referred to as a philosophy, reflects the beliefs and principles that direct departmental activities. Values must be stated clearly and direct the department's response to organizational needs. The staff development specialists must support these values and fulfill their responsibilities accordingly.
A vision is an image of the staff development department's future. Staff development specialists rely on this vision to build a cohesive team that crafts a common identity and future. A vision motivates employees to work to their maximum abilities. It inspires but remains realistic and achievable.
