According to survey results from The Joint Commission, one of the most frequently cited National Patient Safety Goal elements of performance is NPSG.02.01.01, which addresses the way organizations report critical test results to physicians.

The Joint Commission’s 2006 annual report found that only 61.4% of organizations surveyed showed improvement in the way critical test results were reported to physicians. Issues that were most problematic included:

  • Defining the list of critical tests
  • Identifying reasonable reporting time frames
  • Establishing documentation strategies to enhance data collection
  • Improving the way reporting of critical information is accomplished

Because of some misunderstandings related to the standard, The Joint Commission released proposed changes to take effect in 2010. The focus will now be on the patient, and the goal’s requirements have been decreased from seven to two.
