Inside best practice: Strategies for organizing the writing process

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, October 13, 2009

After investing so much time and energy in steering your organization to the point where you are ready to submit material to be evaluated for ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® (MRP) designation, the writing stage can seem like a small final hurdle. But many organizations discover that when they sit down to write the narratives, they are overwhelmed with the amount of evidence collected and unsure of where to start.

The solution is to create a plan so that all you have to do is stick to it. These tips will help ensure that you have a smooth documentation process:

1. Follow a plan. One way to begin is by investigating how other organizations that have already achieved designation organized their documentation process. Visiting or talking to MRP hospitals-either via listserv or direct conversation-will help you make organizational decisions.
If you are applying for redesignation, examine what did and didn't work the last time. Use the successful strategies and toss out the unsuccessful ones.
2. Carefully configure your team. The people who help collect the evidence and assemble the documentation must be a top-notch team. Involve several nurses from various levels of the organization, as well as the project director, and look for people who bring different skills to the team.
Remember, one person doesn't need to do it all. Bringing in different people can create a wider perspective.
