In the mix: Educational program takes students from high school to hospital

Stressed Out Nurses Weekly, September 28, 2009

Texas Health Resources, which operates 14 Dallas-Fort Worth-area hospitals, has launched a program that aims to prepare high school students for nursing careers, reports KDAF news.

The Prodigy Program is 12-week summer course offered to 25 high school graduates, and was created to spur interest in nursing as a career. The program also pays for students' tuition at the University of Texas-Arlington, and students are guaranteed jobs at Texas Health Resources hospitals once education is completed.

The program also has a financial benefit to Texas Health Resources and ensures these nurses are cheaper to hire. Texas Health Resources can train its own nurses, starting early, for about $20,000, according to Human Resources Vice President Bonnie Bell. To recruit a nurse costs about $40,000 to $50,000, she told KDAF.
