A universal floor plan instituted at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in LA since 2007 has been shown to reduce patient safety events, shorten wait times for patient admits, and increase staff satisfaction.
A universal floor plan is designed to keep patients in the same place as much as possible and to bring care and treatment to them. Rooms are suitable for multiple types of patients and staff may be trained in numerous specialties. This reduces the need for patients to travel around the hospital and increases the time nurses are able to spend with the patients. A growing body of evidence shows that when nurses have more time with their patients, the patients have better outcomes.
