Two separate studies have found that patients receive similar quality care at retail medical clinics as they receive at hospital emergency departments, urgent care centers, or their primary care provider’s office.

The studies were conducted by RAND Corp., a nonprofit think tank, and published in the Annals of Internal Medicine. Since the first retail clinic opened in 2000, the numbers have grown to more than 1,000 across the country. Most are located in pharmacies, discount stores, and grocery stores.

The results are good news for retail clinics, which had argued they provided quality care, despite concerns from some physician groups that retails clinics could lead to unforeseen complications that would result in further care and additional costs.
