Emergency departments (ED) may not be able to continue providing their current level of care in today's economic climate unless something changes, says a report recently issued by the federal government.
Payers of Emergency Department Care, 2006 was just published by the U.S. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality—using data only recently available—and finds that federal payments and the uninsured do not pay the full cost of patients' care, leaving EDs with the difficult task of providing the current level of care.
The report says the problem also stems from the dramatic increase in ED visits, rising 23% from 1993 to 2003 (the latest data cited).
