New drama features nurses as main characters

Nurses have an obligation to be aware of media representation of the profession and to take action to make their voices heard when such representation is wrong. Educators have a particular responsibility to be aware of such representation because they often serve as role models for nurses new to the profession and discuss the importance of nursing’s image as part of continuing education and professional development.

Until a few weeks ago, television healthcare dramas featured only physicians as main characters, and nurses were seen only in passing, often as mindless servants, existing only to perform the most menial of tasks at the command of doctors. Recently, however, television networks announced several new shows featuring nurses as the main protagonists.
