Hospital’s evidence-based fall prevention program starts to see results

The Staff Educator has been following the progress of North Adams (MA) Regional Hospital’s efforts to decrease falls and incorporate fall prevention as part of employee performance improvement monitoring since early this year. The hospital is beginning to see results, having already noted a significant reduction in its number of patient falls.

Peg Daly, RN, BS, education specialist, and Debbie Durant, RN, BSN, director of the medical-surgical unit, have worked with dedicated staff nurses to enhance the safety of the hospital’s environment. They formed a falls subcommittee that reviewed and revised falls policy and procedures based on evidence-based data and educated all hospital employees about the new fall prevention program.

The hospital’s long-term goals are to:

• Decrease falls by 10% within 12 months of fall prevention plan implementation
• Develop ongoing performance improvement monitoring
