In the know: Violence in the workplace

Stressed Out Nurses Weekly, July 27, 2009

Violence in the workplace is a concern faced by all healthcare professionals. When you are dealing with a diverse population of patients who may be frightened, emotionally volatile, mentally ill, or under the influence of alcohol or drugs, the potential for physical assault is very real. Most frequently seen in hospital and mental health settings, nurses routinely deal with violence perpetrated by unstable patients.

Being aware of this potentiality is your best defense, so keep the following tips in mind:

  • Keep alert, use your head, and avoid volatile situations
  • Defuse escalating situations.
  • Try to see what your patients see, feel what they feel—try to understand so you can adjust your actions to be less threatening or frightening
  • Never wear you stethoscope around your neck when bending over patients, and never turn your back on someone who has been verbally abusive or who appears unstable
  • If you are at all uncomfortable with a situation, get assistance right away—better to be safe than sorry
