In the news: Nursing gains popularity as many search for new jobs, careers
Stressed Out Nurses Weekly, July 6, 2009
As many lose jobs and search for more security in their next line of work, nursing has become a popular alternative, and many nurses who have been out of the field for years are looking to come back, especially in the Cincinnati, OH, area, reports the Business Courier.
Mary Duffey, executive director of the Greater Cincinnati Health Council's Health Care Workforce Center, which offers a nursing refresher course, has seen a sharp rise in calls and applicants.
Nationally, experts attribute a similar rise to an effort to expand nursing schools, attract young people to the field, and a surge in foreign-born nurses, reports the Wall Street Journal.
The Wall Street Journal also reported that between 2007 and 2008, the nursing workforce saw an 18% surge—the largest in three decades, according to a study being released in Health Affairs journal. Though the nursing shortage has lessened, experts agree that the fix is temporary, and nursing will continue to suffer longtime shortages.
