The Joint Commission recently announced it is developing no new National Patient Safety Goals (NPSG) for 2010 and is reevaluating the current goals to determine whether they are working.
The move follows the announcement earlier this year that NPSG #8, medication reconciliation, will not factor into accreditation decisions, and surveyor findings regarding this goal will not result in hospitals receiving requirements for improvement.
The Joint Commission (formerly JCAHO) is currently soliciting feedback from the public on its Web site. Among the changes under consideration are proposals that as many as eight NPSGs be moved into the standards, as well as clarifications to the 2009 Universal Protocol.
