Inside scoop from our experts: Show support for nursing professional development
HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, May 19, 2009
This week, a reader asks how to demonstrate in the written documentation that the organization supports nursing professional development. Read the response from our advisor Katherine Riley, MSN, RN, NE-BC.
Q: How can I demonstrate in the written documentation, under Component II: Structural empowerment, that the organization supports nursing professional development?
A: You are expected to demonstrate policies and procedures that support the continuing education and competency of nurses. In addition, the organization should describe the types of professional education opportunities that are provided to staff. This might include inservices provided by the organization with an explanation of how the topics for those programs are determined.
One way to meet this expectation is by identifying the educational opportunities that are provided or supported by the organization to support continued education of staff. Include discussion as to how those opportunities are made available to staff and how management ensures that staff have the opportunity to attend. This could include scheduled paid time to attend programs, as well as clinical nurse specialists or managers providing coverage on the nursing unit while a nurse attends an inservice.
