Inside best practice: Gear up for redesignation by rounding

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, May 5, 2009

By Ron Bass, MAEd, BSN, RN-BC, clinical educator at Sarasota (FL) Memorial Healthcare System

Rounding on units was a huge part of the [ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® (MRP)] redesignation preparation process at Sarasota Memorial. Managers, directors, and educators rounded on units and asked staff about the organization’s professional practice model, about how they find standards of care, about the nursing process, and about how nurses are applying the process to practice.

Another successful redesignation strategy we used was having each unit post various documents throughout the unit, including:

  • Exemplars of MRP caring behaviors
  • The organization’s practice model
  • The unit’s care-delivery model
  • The American Nurses Association (ANA) standards
  • The ANA Nurses Code of Ethics

Each document also included information about how the information has been used in practice.
