Staff nurses at Silver Cross Hospital in Joliet, IL, are receiving more than just lectures regarding high-risk procedures. They are receiving hands-on training with a mannequin.

Nurse educators at Silver Cross are using the MegaCode Kelly Advanced mannequin to gauge staff nurses competence with high-risk procedures. They use the mannequin to train nurses on a variety of skills such as how to insert airway devices and chest tubes, check pulse rate and blood pressure, use defibrillators, and assess heart, breath, and bowel sounds.

According to Mary Brenczewski, administrative director of nursing practice at Silver Cross, the mannequin enables nurses to demonstrate decision-making, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills. It also allows nurse educators to promote patient safety, communication, and teamwork.
