This week's expert, Barbara Brunt, MA, MN, RN-BC, identifies who should be trained to perform competency assessment.

Q: How do I know what staff members possess the qualifications to be a competency assessor?

A: First, understand that not all staff members should be trained to assess their colleagues’ competency. Competency assessment is an acquired skill that not all healthcare professionals possess.

A qualified competency assessor should possess:

  • Excellent performance of the competencies being evaluated
  • Tact and the desire to help colleagues improve their job performance
  • The desire to acquire/enhance adult education skills
  • Demonstration of excellent interpersonal communication skills
