Did you know that bruises and red marks on the skin of Vietnamese patients could be caused by a common Vietnamese tradition called coin rubbing? Or that some patients from Asian cultures may be offended by a healthcare professional touching them?

These are just two of the lessons taught at Hawaii Pacific University's (HPU) Transcultural Nursing Center. Clinicians attending workshops at the center are taught to be responsive to patients' cultural beliefs, and honor them whenever possible.

HPU is the only institution in the United States offering a certificate in transcultural nursing for undergraduates. It held its first transcultural nursing class in 1998. The center opened five years ago.
