This week's experts, Suzanne C. Beyea, RN, PhD, FAAN, and Mary Jo Slattery, RN, MS, explain how educators can ensure they have support for evidence-based practice programs from hospital leadership.
Q. How can I ensure that my hospital's leaders will support my efforts to implement evidence-based practice?
A. Nursing leadership must strongly support both making changes and adopting evidence-based practice. Here are several questions you should ask nursing leaders:
-
Does my chief nurse executive believe in and demonstrate commitment to evidence-based practice?
-
How does the chief nurse executive demonstrate support?
-
How does the organizational culture support evidence-based practice
-
What resources are offered within the nursing library and electronically?
-
How is information about evidence-based nursing practice currently being disseminated to the bedside nurse?
-
Are we an ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® facility or are we applying for designation? And does adequate support for nursing research exist?
