Inside best practice: Embark on the journey for the right reasons
HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, January 13, 2009
By Gladys Mouro, RN, BSN, MSN, assistant hospital director for nursing services at American University Beirut Medical Center in Lebanon.
Embarking on the journey to ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® (MRP) designation is not an easy trip. The road map can be very long and tiring, but it is magical. When we first considered the journey, in an area of unrest and instability, many thought we were unrealistic and could not do it. In reality, going through the journey to this date has been exciting. It forces you to revisit your entire infrastructure, the way you do your business, the way you think, and the way you relate to each other. It forces you to create a framework of quality and staff engagement, and it changes the history of nursing in your organization and the region.
Tips to consider when embarking on the journey:
- Be courageous and a risk taker.
- Identify the key players, those who will take the extra mile and who are unconditionally committed.
- Talk to everyone in the organization about designation and the advantage. It becomes contagious.
- Read carefully every word in the manual and follow the instructions.
- Be passionate about MRP designation. If you do not have the passion and unconvinced of the benefits, do not go into it.
