Inside the Forces: Adhere to four steps for successful shared governance

Is your organization looking to implement a shared governance model to apply for ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® designation? If yes, take note of the following four elements that are essential to the successful implementation of shared governance:
- A committed nurse executive must be invested in process empowerment and must be willing to undertake the efforts necessary to implement shared governance.
- A strong management team in terms of commitment to one another, to nursing, to the organization, and to the implementation process must exist.
- The process cannot be implemented if employees do not have a basic understanding of shared governance and if they cannot build on that understanding with a working knowledge of what is to be accomplished. There must be a clear destination.
- The plan and timeline for implementation are critical for charting progress points.
