In the news: Nurse-designed pillows bring patients long-lasting comfort
Stressed Out Nurses Weekly, January 5, 2009
A patient's recovery from abdominal surgery is often a painful one, but ICU nurses at Morris (IL) Hospital and Healthcare Centers know the craft of comfort.
Staff designed a custom pillow for patients to hold against their stomach when coughing to alleviate discomfort post surgery. Embroidered with the words "Morris Hospital ICU, Excellent Hands Caring for You," the pillows are smaller and easier to handle than the hospital pillows previously used. The pillows are embroidered by nurse Michele Battistelli, who dedicates two hours of her free time to sewing each pillow and switches fabrics depending on the season.
Staff have given pillows to more than 100 patients, which are used during their hospital stay and after discharge, and they have received positive comments from patients.
