Inside scoop from our experts: Get nonnursing staff involved in the program

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, December 16, 2008

This week, a reader asks for ways to engage nonnursing departments on the road to ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® designation. Read the response from our advisor Diana Swihart PhD, DMin, MSN, CS, APRN, BC, clinical nurse specialist, nursing education at Bay Pines VA Healthcare System, in Bay Pines, FL.

Q: What ways can help us engage nonnursing departments on the road to Magnet Recognition Program® designation?

A: Nonnursing stakeholders are critical in establishing and maintaining a culture of excellence. The following are three ways to educate, communicate, and engage:

  1. Make sure the steering committee and champions have representatives from all departments (e.g., HR, information technology, medicine, pharmacy, housekeeping, etc.)
  2. Encourage nonnurses to share stories with one another on how they have contributed to interdisciplinary efforts
  3. Collect questions and ideas at multidisciplinary team meetings. Do not assume that nonnursing leaders know anything about the program, shared governance, or nursing-specific achievements. Engage one another at every opportunity.
